Resource File Pseudo-Localization

Select Fix Code=>Resources=>Pseudo-Localization to create a pseudo-localized copy of your resource file. By adding characters, such as Arabic, Kanji, or extended ASCII, to each externalized string, the new pseudo-localized resource file can simulate a new Locale that you can then use to test your application.

Pseudo-localization helps you detect the following important internationalization issues:

• missed string externalization
• character corruption when displaying the pseudo-localized strings
• identifying fonts that are unable to display the pseudo-localized strings
• layout spacing problems resulting from the longer strings
• locale issues where switching to the pseudo-locale doesn't properly load the pseudo-localized resource file

Pseudo-localization supports adding characters to the front, back, or both ends of your resource strings. You can also stretch strings by a certain percentage to allow for longer translations. For example, German strings are typically about 30% larger than English ones.

The top text field is where you enter the characters that are to be inserted into each string.

Place Pseudo-Characters in: These check boxes determine where in each string the pseudo-characters will be placed.

Percent Length Increase: Use this slider bar to increase each string by a certain percentage, rather than just prepending or appending the fixed number of pseudo-characters. Instead, each string will be stretched by adding pseudo-characters, using fewer or repeating them as needed.

Resource Type: Select the resource file type to pseudo-localize.

Resource File: Globalyzer will automatically select the resource file used in the currently selected scan as long as Resource File Frequency is set to Project rather than File. Use the Browse button if you want to pseudo-localize another file, or if a file isn't already selected.

Header File: If there is a header file linked to your resource file, it needs to be selected here.

Pseudo-Localization File: This is the output name and location of the generated file. To change the default name, enter in a new name. Press the Browse button to adjust the path or choose an existing resource file to overwrite.

Once these fields are filled in, the OK button will no longer be grayed out. Click OK to generate the pseudo-localized resource file and close the window. Click Cancel to dismiss all changes and close the window without creating a file.
